Europe's Copper Premiums Just Hit Record Highs. The Metal Isn't the Story — Certainty Is

The short answer: For 2027 contracts, Aurubis announced a European copper cathode premium of $347 per tonne over LME, and Codelco announced $350/t for Europe — both all-time records, up from $228 and $234 respectively in the previous cycle. Spot premiums in Rotterdam, reported around $210–220/t, sit well below the contract numbers. The gap between the two is the price of certainty: guaranteed tonnage, delivered on schedule, in a market that no longer trusts availability.

Why contract premiums decoupled from spot

A premium is not the price of copper — the LME leg can be hedged by anyone. The premium pays for physical metal in a specific place, in a specific month, from a counterparty who will actually deliver. When that is in doubt, the premium is where the doubt gets priced.

Three forces are doing the work:

  1. Structural tightness in Europe. Smelter and refinery capacity is concentrated, energy costs are high, and scrap — the swing supply — is contested by every region at once.
  2. The US tariff overhang. The US copper tariff decision under the Section 232 process (proposals discussed run to 15% in 2027 and 30% in 2028) is still pending. Metal has been pulled toward COMEX warehouses — market commentary puts US exchange stocks around 1.6 million tonnes — which tightens the rest of the world’s available pool and makes the decision itself the biggest binary variable for 2027 physical trade.
  3. Buyers learned the lesson of the squeeze years. A production line stopped for want of cathode costs more per hour than a year of premium. Procurement now buys delivery assurance first and argues price second.

What we watch next

Whether the tariff decision lands, and at what level; whether Rotterdam spot premiums converge up toward contract levels (tightness confirming itself) or contract holders start reselling (tightness easing); and scrap availability, which decides how much secondary metal can relieve the primary squeeze.
